Court strikes out suit seeking sack of Magu, Lawal

A Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday struck out a suit seeking to compel President Muhammadu Buhari to sack acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, and suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, David Lawal. The court’s decision was informed by a change of mind by the plaintiffs – Save Nigeria Group (SNG) and Kingdom Human Rights Foundation International (KHRFI) – whose lawyer, Kingdom Okeke, applied to withdraw the cases. The groups filed the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/15/1072/16 on December 29, 2015, in the wake of the corruption allegations levelled by the Senate against Lawal and Magu. Yesterday, Okeke applied orally for the withdrawal of the case on the ground that his client had reconsidered their position on the matter in public interest. Customs, Rice Farmers Sign MoU To Stop Smuggling

The Nigeria Customs Service and the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to stop rice smuggling through land border into the country. Nigeria set to surpass Ghana in annual yam export

The Federal Government said it is strategising to surpass Ghana in the export of yam to Europe and other continents. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh said this when he received the Technical Committee on Nigeria Yam Export Programme in Abuja. Ogbeh said the programme to be flagged off on June 29, would enable the country earn foreign exchange from agricultural produce in order to substitute the oil and gas sector. Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, says a federal high court never ruled that the national assembly had power to increase estimates of the appropriation act. He was reacting to a claim by the house of representatives that “the federal high court has ruled that the national assembly has the power to increase or review upward the budget estimates laid before it by the executive”. Last week, the senate and the house issued statements flaying Babatunde Fashola, minister of works, power and housing, for saying that the national assembly introduced new projects into the 2017 budget. The minister was also reported to have said that the legislature indiscriminately reduced the budgetary allocations of some projects, and that a judicial remedy might be sought to determine if the national assembly had the power to increase budget estimates. Police hunt for another soldier who was part of Evans’ gang

Police are on the hunt for another soldier, believed to be a member of the gang run by suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeje George Onwuamadike aka Evans. According to The Nation, the soldier whose identity is yet to be revealed, was attached to one of the Army formations in Lagos. A source revealed the police have the soldier’s names and pictures and would leave no stone unturned in arresting him.  “He should have been arrested on Saturday night but we believe he might have gone into hiding after his colleague, Victor Chukwunonso, was caught. That was why the police high command did not want to release information on the arrest of Chukwunonso because there are so many others being investigated.  “But I know he would be caught. Our bosses will simply approach army authorities with evidence and request that he be handed over to the police,” he said.
